Backports 5 Bitcoin Core v0.27 pull request(s) to Dash.

What was done?

  • net: Hardcoded seeds update for 0.21  bitcoin/bitcoin#20237 — net: Hardcoded seeds update for 0.21.
Upstream: net: Hardcoded seeds update for 0.21  bitcoin/bitcoin#20237 (merge 95bde34). Dash commit: 235522b.
Only the new contrib/seeds/.gitignore is backported, and it ignores Dash's seed-generation input protx_list.json (made by the command in Dash's contrib/seeds/README.md) instead of Bitcoin's seeds_main.txt. The rest of the upstream PR is not for Dash: it refreshes Bitcoin's seed IPs and generated header and bumps a user-agent regex that Dash's protx-based makeseeds.py doesn't have.

    Dash adaptations:

    • contrib/seeds/.gitignore: ignores Dash's intermediate input protx_list.json (per contrib/seeds/README.md) instead of Bitcoin's crawler dump seeds_main.txt, which Dash's workflow never creates

Not applicable to Dash (intentionally omitted):

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: edits PATTERN_AGENT (/Satoshi: versions); Dash's makeseeds.py builds seeds from protx list valid JSON and has no user-agent filter
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main.txt: Bitcoin mainnet node list on port 8333; Dash keeps its own masternode-derived seed list, regenerated at its own releases
    • src/chainparamsseeds.h: generated from Bitcoin's nodes_main.txt; Dash's header is generated from its own seed lists
  • net: Update hardcoded seeds for 23.x bitcoin/bitcoin#24417 — net: Update hardcoded seeds for 23.x.
Upstream: net: Update hardcoded seeds for 23.x bitcoin/bitcoin#24417 (merge b71a077). Dash commit: 9082abc.
Backports the only Dash-relevant code change from net: Update hardcoded seeds for 23.x bitcoin/bitcoin#24417: lookup_asn's improved error message, applied to Dash's resolveasn (Dash already had the v3 PATTERN_ONION regex). The Bitcoin seed data (nodes_main.txt, nodes_main_manual.txt, chainparamsseeds.h), the PATTERN_AGENT version list and the sipa-based README steps do not apply to Dash, whose seeds come from its protx list and onion_seeds.txt.

    Dash adaptations:

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: the improved ASN-lookup error message lands in Dash's resolveasn() (Dash's name for lookup_asn), where ip is a dict, so the f-string prints the dict
    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: the PATTERN_ONION v3 change needs no edit; Dash's script already matches 56-char v3 onions

Not applicable to Dash (intentionally omitted):

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: PATTERN_AGENT /Satoshi: version bump; Dash's makeseeds.py builds seeds from protx list valid JSON and has no user-agent filter
    • contrib/seeds/README.md: edits the sipa.be curl + nodes_main_manual.txt steps; Dash's README documents its protx-list/onion_seeds.txt workflow instead
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main.txt: Bitcoin mainnet node list on port 8333; Dash keeps its own masternode-derived seed list, regenerated at its own releases
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main_manual.txt: Bitcoin's manual torv3/I2P/CJDNS bootstrap nodes (port 8333); Dash's counterpart is contrib/seeds/onion_seeds.txt, fed to makeseeds.py
    • src/chainparamsseeds.h: generated from Bitcoin's nodes_main.txt; Dash's header is generated from its own seed lists
  • contrib: Use asmap for ASN lookup in makeseeds bitcoin/bitcoin#24864 — contrib: Use asmap for ASN lookup in makeseeds.
Upstream: contrib: Use asmap for ASN lookup in makeseeds bitcoin/bitcoin#24864 (merge 7f2c983). Dash commit: 07009a5.
Backports contrib: Use asmap for ASN lookup in makeseeds bitcoin/bitcoin#24864: makeseeds.py now looks up ASNs from a local asmap file (via the new, identical contrib/seeds/asmap.py) instead of cymru DNS queries, and the change is adapted to Dash's protx-list-based script, whose own parallel DNS resolver it removes and whose file arguments it converts to argparse positionals. The README and .gitignore are updated for the asmap-filled.dat workflow, the dnspython dependency is dropped, and the only upstream hunks left out (a parseline() indentation fi

    Dash adaptations:

    • contrib/seeds/.gitignore: adds asmap-filled.dat next to Dash's protx_list.json; Dash never ignored seeds_main.txt so that context line is not added
    • contrib/seeds/README.md: Dash's protx-list instructions gain the asmap-filled.dat download and the -a flag; dnspython Dependencies section removed as upstream does
    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: Dash's parallel resolveasn() and its dns.resolver/multiprocessing Pool setup are replaced by the asmap lookup (multiprocessing import dropped, now unused)
    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: argparse also declares Dash's optional positional protx_list and onion_seeds args, which used to be read from sys.argv[1]/[2]
    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: upstream's 'Loading and parsing DNS seeds…' message is left out; Dash reads protx JSON and already prints its own load counts

Not applicable to Dash (intentionally omitted):

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: upstream's whitespace fix to return None in parseline(); Dash's parseip() reads protx JSON and has no such line
  • net: update hardcoded mainnet seeds for 24.x bitcoin/bitcoin#25911 — net: update hardcoded mainnet seeds for 24.x.
Upstream: net: update hardcoded mainnet seeds for 24.x bitcoin/bitcoin#25911 (merge 1420547). Dash commit: a7e34cc.
Brings over the only parts of the upstream makeseeds.py change that apply to Dash: the copyright bump and the reordered import. The PATTERN_AGENT bump and Bitcoin's regenerated seed data (nodes_main.txt, nodes_main_manual.txt, chainparamsseeds.h) are left out because Dash builds its seeds from its own masternode list.

    Dash adaptations:

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: takes the copyright bump and the alphabetical move of import collections; Dash's extra import json stays where it was

Not applicable to Dash (intentionally omitted):

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: PATTERN_AGENT /Satoshi: version bump (23.0, 24.99); Dash's makeseeds.py builds seeds from protx list valid JSON and has no user-agent filter
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main.txt: Bitcoin mainnet node list on port 8333; Dash keeps its own masternode-derived seed list, regenerated at its own releases
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main_manual.txt: Bitcoin's manual torv3/I2P/CJDNS nodes on port 8333; Dash's counterpart, contrib/seeds/onion_seeds.txt, lists Dash nodes and isn't updated with Bitcoin addresses
    • src/chainparamsseeds.h: Generated from Bitcoin's nodes_main.txt; Dash's header is generated from its own seed lists
  • Fixed seeds update for 27.0 bitcoin/bitcoin#29561 — Fixed seeds update for 27.0.
Upstream: Fixed seeds update for 27.0 bitcoin/bitcoin#29561 (merge 55bd5d8). Dash commit: a9adc47.
Backports the makeseeds.py I2P support from Fixed seeds update for 27.0 bitcoin/bitcoin#29561 (pattern, parser branch, per-net limit in filterbyasn, stats column and header), with sline[0] changed to ip_in for Dash's parseip. The PATTERN_AGENT bump and the i2p uptime threshold target filters that Dash replaced with protx-based masternode filtering, and Bitcoin's regenerated node lists and chainparamsseeds.h are not for Dash, following the earlier net: update hardcoded mainnet seeds for 24.x bitcoin/bitcoin#25911 seeds backport.

    Dash adaptations:

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: I2P address matching goes into Dash's parseip(ip_in) rather than upstream's parseline(), so it reads ip_in instead of sline[0]
    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: I2P entries reach Dash's script through the onion_seeds.txt input, which every line of is passed to parseip(); no new input path was added

Not applicable to Dash (intentionally omitted):

    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: PATTERN_AGENT /Satoshi: bump (25.0/25.1, 26.0/26.99); Dash's makeseeds.py builds seeds from protx list valid JSON and has no user-agent filter
    • contrib/seeds/makeseeds.py: 'i2p' entry in the req_uptime dict; Dash's script has no uptime filter because masternode inputs carry no uptime data
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main.txt: Bitcoin mainnet node list on port 8333; Dash keeps its own masternode-derived seed list, regenerated at its own releases
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_main_manual.txt: Bitcoin's manual torv3/I2P/CJDNS nodes; Dash's counterpart, contrib/seeds/onion_seeds.txt, lists Dash nodes and isn't updated with Bitcoin addresses
    • contrib/seeds/nodes_test.txt: Bitcoin testnet node list; Dash maintains its own testnet seeds
    • src/chainparamsseeds.h: Generated from Bitcoin's nodes_main.txt/nodes_test.txt; Dash's header is generated from its own seed lists

How Has This Been Tested?

Breaking Changes

None beyond the upstream changes themselves.

I've credited RandyMcMillan for the first commit because of bitcoin#20190.

There are at least enough onions this time! Number of IPv6 nodes that pass all the requirements seems similar to last time in bitcoin#18506.

For the next major release we'll want TORv3 hardcoded peers as well. This makes no sense now as there are hardly any. But it'd make sense to think about how to collect them because they cannot come from the DNS seeds.

2020-10-28 12:04:45 jnewbery wumpus: Do you have any suggestions for how to review bitcoin#20237 ?
2020-10-28 12:28:37 wumpus jnewbery: previous PRs like it might be a guide there (bitcoin#18506, bitcoin#16999), e.g. people could try to repeat the last step in https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/tree/master/contrib/seeds#seeds and see if it ends up with the same .h file, you could also repeat the entire process but as the list of peers from the seeder will be different every time that will give a (slightly, hopefully)
  2020-10-28 12:28:37 wumpus different output
2020-10-28 12:49:40 wumpus testing what part of the peers are connectable is also useful
2020-10-28 12:51:05 wumpus or to go deeper, whether most part of the nodes are 'good nodes' and not say spy nodes, but i don't know what means of testing

Pull request description:

Add an argument `-a` to provide a asmap file to do the IP to ASN lookups.

This speeds up the script greatly, and makes the output deterministic. Also removes the dependency on `dns.lookup`.

I've annotated the output with ASxxxx comments to provide a way to verify the functionality.

For now I've added instructions in README.md to download and use the `demo.map` from the asmap repository. When we have some other mechanism for distributing asmap files we could switch to that.

This continues bitcoin#24824. I've removed the fallbacks and extra complexity, as everyone will be using the same instructions anyway.

Walkthrough

The change adds an ASMap module that converts IP prefixes and ASN mappings to and from the binary format. makeseeds.py loads an ASMap file and uses local lookups to filter IPv4 and IPv6 seeds by ASN. It also recognizes I2P seed addresses and includes them in statistics and output. The command-line inputs and seed-generation instructions now include the ASMap file.

Seed generation now uses a local ASMap file for ASN lookups and adds I2P seed support. If the downloaded ASMap file is invalid, the tool prints "Done." and then crashes with an unrelated-looking error. It should report that the file is invalid instead. This affects only maintainers generating seed lists, and the problem is easy to notice and recover from. The change is mergeable, with a small follow-up recommended.

P2 Badge Reject nonzero ports for I2P seeds

When an I2P entry in the newly accepted manual seed input uses a nonzero port (for example the :9999 convention used throughout the existing onion_seeds.txt), this assignment preserves that port in nodes_main.txt. The checked fixed-seed connection path then reaches Session::Connect, which rejects every I2P service whose port differs from zero (src/i2p.cpp:219-227, with I2P_SAM31_PORT defined as 0 in src/netaddress.h:105-106), so the generated seed is guaranteed to be unusable; reject such a line or normalize it to port 0.

The backport matches upstream: bitcoin#29561 added I2P parsing to parseip() with port = int(m.group(2)), and our copy is identical. The script taking a manual seed file is older than this branch, so rejecting or normalising I2P ports is a change to upstream's design, not a backport error.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static verification of edf98c5..a9adc47 found no actionable backport or Dash-adaptation defects: the ASN and I2P changes match upstream while preserving Dash's masternode filtering and downstream seed serialization. The two discussed input-validation concerns are inherited upstream behavior, not backport defects. Current CI reports successful builds, lint, and ordinary Linux tests, with multiprocess, ASan, and TSan tests still pending; no builds or tests were run locally.

bitcoin#24864 (merged in #7925) also reworded the README intro to say the
commands run from contrib/seeds and added a progress line while the input
list is read. Both hunks were dropped because the input there is the DNS
seeds dump, which Dash replaced by the protx list; this applies them to the
protx list.
